What Is History of Adhesive Tapes?
January 05,2022
Adhesive tape is composed of two parts: base material and adhesive, which connect two or more unconnected objects by bonding. A layer of adhesive is coated on the surface. The earliest adhesives came from animals and plants. In the nineteenth century, rubber was the main component of adhesives; in modern times, various polymers are widely used. Adhesives can stick things because their molecules and the molecules of the objects to be connected form bonds, which can firmly bond the molecules together.
The tape was invented by Richard Drew in the United States. So how did he think of it? In 1920, when Richard joined 3M, it was in the middle of the sandpaper craft. One day, Richard accidentally sneaked into a car shop. He saw that they were testing sandpaper called Wetordry (waterproof emery cloth). Richard was very curious. Because in the 19th century in the United States, a two-color automobile spraying was very popular, but it was difficult to control. After joining 3M, Richard spent 3 years in the laboratory to develop the first masking tape!
Adhesive tapes can be divided into high-temperature tapes, double-sided tapes, insulating tapes, special tapes, pressure-sensitive tapes, and die-cut tapes according to their functions. Different functions are suitable for different industry needs. A layer of adhesive is applied to the surface of the tape to make the tape stick to the object.
